Artist statement (Mark Higgins)

To see with the eye is to touch without hurting.

So many bodies are used to sell something, and so many bodies are simply used.

What I try to explore in a work of art is the moment beauty begins to awaken and emerge from the unseen. The experience may feel like the first glimpse of presence, perhaps an awakening of something unexpected, something like the beginnings of an unsought love or some kind of undeserved goodness.  

What greater joy can there be than to discover beauty in a landscape that is all but ignored, like the landscape of the ungraced male body? Or to experience the speech of that body's hiddenness, with colors and graces that can't be cartooned? Or trashed? Or spat away as dishonorable or ignoble? Or simply "used"?

I hope some of my work can present an inkling of its presence as a gift, the moment of a body's sacredness or a glimpse of its life that can't be owned. 

The test of art for me is whether a body's person remains unsullied or free, offering an intimacy without time, and in simplicity.

Ver con el ojo es tocar sin doler.

Tantos cuerpos se usan para vender algo, y tantos cuerpos se usan simplemente.

Lo que trato de capturar en una obra de arte es el momento en que la belleza comienza a despertar y a emerger de lo invisible. Esa experiencia que puede sentirse como el primer vistazo de la presencia, tal vez un despertar de algo inesperado, algo así como el comienzo de un amor no buscado o algún tipo de bondad inmerecida.

¿Qué mayor alegría puede haber que descubrir la belleza en un paisaje que casi se ignora, como el paisaje del cuerpo masculino puro, sin adornos? ¿O ver el discurso oculto de un cuerpo, con sus colores y sus gracias que no se pueden caricaturar? ¿O destrozado? ¿O escupir como deshonroso o innoble? ¿O simplemente "usado"?

Espero que parte de mi trabajo pueda presentar un indicio de eso como un regalo, el momento de la presencia de un cuerpo o un vislumbre de su vida que no se puede poseer.

La prueba de arte es si la persona de un cuerpo permanece inmaculada o libre, y su momento se ofrece sin tiempo, in simplicidad.
